Battle of the Somme

The Wave
The Wave

To commemorate the war dead here in the UK we have the symbol of the poppy, a flower common on the killing fields of France.

Last year there was a wonderful art installation of hand made pottery poppies at the Tower of London.  This year the installation has been split up and part of it is now setup in Lincoln Castle and called ‘The Wave’.

Today to commemorate the 100th anniversary of the battle of the Somme we had a ceremony to remember the war dead on all sides here in the Castle and at the Cathedral.

Giving Blood

Giving BloodNot much happening today, apart from a quick trip up to the hospital to give blood.

It does not take long and you get unlimited chocolate biscuits, which is the main reason I go 😉

Club Biscuit

If there is a session near you, give it a go, free tea, coffee, or hot chocolate, lots of chocolate biscuits and a nice lay down.  What more do you want.

A walk in the woods

Willingham Woods Walk

Every few months the Lincolnshire Greyhound Trust organises a group walk for people who have adopted a greyhound from them.  Yesterday we attending our first with Timmy the Greyhound, this was held at Willingham Woods near Market Rasen.

It was a fun walk and gave all the hounds a good chance to socialize with their own kind, as some greyhounds do not like other breeds having only ever met Greyhounds and humans during their racing careers.

Packing Light

D200, 300mm & Gitzo

We are off tomorrow for a few days to Norfolk and Suffolk.  Its just break away from home to get a rest and some change of scenery but of course i’ll be taking some camera equipment along.

There is the opportunity for wildlife photography but I think this time i’ll be keeping it simple and leaving the SLR’s and big glass at home.

Pleased to see you

Garden Chickens Project-15

This bank holiday weekend we had a trip to the beach with Timmy the Greyhound, as Timmy had such a long day out on Saturday, we let the Chickens have the free run of garden on Sunday.

Timmy on the Beach

It was an amusing sight to see four chickens spot me from the bottom of the garden and take off, flying at about 30cm above the floor racing to greet me.

Whether they were that pleased to see me or it was because I often have a handful of corn when I visit them i’ll let the reader decided.

The photo of Timmy is just a quick snap with my iPhone.  Out of interest i decided to make an A4 print and was very surprised and pleased with the quality, there is a good reason why compact sales are falling.  With good print quality and with the data connection most phones have allowing a quick upload to Twitter or Facebook, its now the preferred camera.

Veg Plot – Peas and Potatoes

Timmy-2

The weekend had grown cold but on the whole was still sunny.  Timmy the Greyhound sunbathed while Caroline tidied the boarders and I planted some peas and potatoes.

Timmy-3

As you can see its very tiring work this gardening.

Family News – Garden Update

We now have a shiny new six foot fence around the garden which looks a lot better and more importantly Timmy the Greyhound can now do zoomies round the garden in safety.

This meant we could also put the composter back together and I could cut the grass for the first time this year.

I also started sowing our third crop of the season. The onions and garlic are already in, and as we are still having the odd frost in the morning I decided to sow some peas in trays and put them in the cold frame.

Household DIY

Easter weekend and we took the opportunity to replace the old master bedroom curtain rails with smart wooden poles and new curtains.

Another job done in the house but this year we will be concentrating on the garden though I do hope to get the kitchen decorated this year.

Discover Lincolnshire Day

Lincolnshire's Lincoln Cathedral

This weekend was Discover Lincolnshire Day, if your after a weekends break then Lincolnshire has everything to offer, from antique fairs, castles and historic cathedrals, to motorcycle and car racing at the iconic Cadwell Park.

Baby seal

For a photographer like me then the views of the Lincolnshire Wolds to the fantastic architecture of the buildings, there is always something to photograph, and as we head into spring the parks and nature reserves have much to offer.

Learn to Play Day 2016

Learn to Play Day

I am not a brilliant musician, whilst I used to be in the choir as a child, I am now limited to poor banjo and piano playing.

Not enough people play an instrument in the UK, which is a shame.  To help encourage people this weekend is learntoplayday.  As with many of these things its just not advertised enough.
