Visit to the Father in Law: or Have a play with his new Sony A55

Tuesday as usual we visited the father in law, Alan.

Normally its a motorcycle ride straight from work to the village where he lives, but tonight we headed home first to get the car.  It was a cold day and neither of us were packing our thermal undies; it was likely to be late night so rather then face a cold trip home on the Bike, the car sounded a better bet.  It would also give me a chance to grab my laptop, I wanted to have a play with the default blog options my hosting company provides.

The reason for our visit,  just the usual Tuesday night visit, to inflict my cooking on him.  Today, cauliflower and home made cheese sauce.  At least thats what I made for Caroline and Alan, for myself a burger.  I cannot stand cauliflower.

There was another reason for making the visit.  Alan had purchased a new Sony A55, a fun little camera which I can well recommend for a beginner or someone wanting a small body SLR.  Rather a unique camera with its fixed mirror, kind of a hybrid between a EVIL (Electronic Viewfinder Interchangeable Lens Camera) and a normal SLR.

that fitness kick

Colds recovered from, we both decided we needed to get fitter, so this month we have hit the gym every week, we also started Pilates (unfortunately theres no Yoga at our gym currently), and Richard has started running three times a week. Only two miles and a very gentle walk/run until he gets back into it.

The 7th July was Barton Upon Humber’s bike night. This was our first ever visit, lots of entertainment, thousands of bikers and all the local pubs had live bands on. We parked up in the grounds of the Catholic Church, and for a Pound we could not only park but they also stored our Crash Helmets, safely in the Church.

It was a fun night, not as many visitors as usual, the forecast of rain but a few people off, but luckily it stayed away. We indulged in some junk food, burgers, hotdogs etc, and once we got home treated ourselves to a cold beer.

Mid month and we took a day off, it was likely that I would have to work all weekend, and we both had plenty of hours owed us, so we took a flexi day and visited Gibraltar Point nature reserve.

The weather was variable, alternating between hot bright sunshine and shoot periods of extremely heavy rain and high winds. Still a fun day out.

Holidays and Photography

First of it was the start of the cricket season. Now I have no interest in Cricket but for the local league it was my work team against my village team. Now who to support, a difficult one.

We went along and took the camera’s. Neither of us have done any sports photography for a long time. Its an expensive field of photography needing expensive long lens. The pros tend to use 400 to 600mm lens. We have a 70-200mm f/2.8 and a 180mm f/2.8, so equipped with these we gave it ago.

Both teams played well but the village won through in the end. I have to admit it was a cool May evening and we did leave before the end, taking shelter in the local pub and enjoying a couple of pints beer. Our local always has a good round of guest beers and tonight was no different.

To finish off the evening it was then a walk over the road to the fish and chip shop. Fish and Chips all round, and then a slow walk home.

For the last two weeks of May we had our big holiday. This year it was a motorcycle trip round the whole of the British Isles taking in the furthest East, South, West and Northernly points.

Before we went we had a one quick day out on the bike, a day trip to Whitby.

The weather was, how shall we say; dramatic.

Bills and Courses

Not quite as bad as the title suggests. The month started of with some birthdays. Caroline’s and Angela’s and Robert’s towards the end.

As you can see Angelia’s birthday was the Big One!

Then the bills, we had to get both bikes serviced and the Honda MOT’ed, as usually she passed with flying colours.

We had a day at Whisby Nature Reserve, mainly doing nature (bird), and macro photography, fun but not many keepers. We also had lunch in the visitors centre, always a good meal.

The middle of the month saw us take some time off for a long weekend.

It was a trip to Ashby de la Zouch for a two day sowing course, Caroline learning new techniques and skills in her sowing craft.

Richard thus had two days in which to photography the the local area. Day one was spent in the local town, mainly photographing the castle. While Day two was a visit to the zoo, to camp out by the Leopard enclosure and waiting for the weather and the Leopard to coincide.

The end of the month saw Richard back in the studio and also planning our next big bike trip. Not long now.

North Yorkshire Holiday, Hot Tube and Birthdays

Well it was time for our first holiday of the year. The destination was North Yorkshire, one of our favourite locations. With this years winter being much harsher then the last few years it was decided that our first holiday would be in the car.

We had booked a week in a cabin in Griffon Forest, just the two of us.

Its the perfect romantic getaway. Large Jacuzzi bath, hot tub outside, chocolates and a bottle of Cava waiting for your arrival, its something we can definitely recommend.

The first day saw us have a trip to Castle Howard, while the second we spend round York, Caroline found a quilt shop and we also visited a quilt museum.

We made good use of the hot tub and one night we even had snow! That did not stop us using the hot tub. Snow on the ground, gentle snow falling and us sat in the hot tub drinking a bottle of fine Champagne we just happened to have brought with us.

After a most restful and enjoyable holiday we had a joint birthday party to attend. The Sunday morning of the party saw me at at work at 07:30, upgrading some of our customers UNIX’ appliances, that all went well and it was a quick ride home to collect Caroline and then off to the party.

It was a full family get together and much chocolate cake was eaten!

Happy Birthday Sofia and Ethan!

The end of the month saw us making a shopping trip to Nottingham to spoil ourselves a little, as usual we ended up getting very little, were not very good at shopping but we had fun anyway, a nice meal out and a nice but tiring day.

New Year

We had Richard’s Mother and Caroline’s Father round for New Year’s day. A light salad for lunch followed by home made steak pie! Very tasty, rather extravagant as I use a whole bottle of red wine to make the gravy, but very worth while.

The first week back at work and we had to commute via car, even the Brayford Pool was frozen solid.

Work continued to be busy and a few extra hours had to be put in. We also went out to celebrate a colleagues fiftieth birthday. Congratulations JK, hope I look that young at fifty!

Lastly Richard managed to squeeze in a studio photo-shoot.

Its Christmas!

December and more steady work. We worked up to Christmas Eve and also collected our goose for Christmas lunch while on our lunch break. We only had to provide cover till 15:30 then it was a quick bike ride home with the goose safely tucked into the top box.

Once home we relaxed and had a selection of nibbles such as Olives, Cheese and biscuits etc, while drinking Champagne.

With all the snow Caroline’s father was not going to risk the long drive to Caroline’s elder sister so he came to us for Christmas lunch. A very pleasant day all in all.

Boxing day saw an improvement in the weather and we all spent the day with Caroline’s dad, and the rest of the family also descended on him. How can small children make so much noise. We also had two more iPhones join the family. They certainly seem to be popular.

The week between Christmas and New Year saw us back at work on cover but we had booked New Year’s Eve off. In the morning Richard used the excuse of going shopping to take a fifty mile blast round the north of the county on the GS Motorbike.

New Year’s Eve was spent pretty much like Christmas Eve, with red wine followed by Champagne to welcome in the new decade.

Heres wishing you all a prosperous and happy 2010. Here in the Brown household were certainly looking forward to better times. We spend far too much time in hospitals in 2008/9 and we have some unhappy memories to forget.

Whitby Holiday

Time for another holiday this month, a week in Whitby. A lazy week, which included a visit to Castle Howard, walks along the beach. Enjoyable meals, evenings of good food, good wine and beer

The end of the month was Whitby Goth Weekend. So we jumped on the bike and went for day out. It was a ‘necessary trip’ according to Richard, in order to scrub in the new tires.
