Sailing

On the Pool

While I have done a little kayaking in the past I have never sailed before but it is something I have always wanted to try.

Sailing

This weekend North Hykeham sailing club had a taster session day so this Saturday I visited them and had a go at sailing for the first time.

Sailing-2

We were placed either singly or in pairs with an experienced helm.
Sailing-3

For the first session I went out in an RS Vision.  I was at the front handling the jib sail, while my instructor handled the main sail and rudder.

The basic manoeuvres of tacking and gybe were demonstrated and after a while we switched positions.
Sailing-4

With me in the rear I handled the rudder while my instructor handled both sails, and we practiced the tack and gybe again.  Once I got the hang of that I took over the main sail as well as the rudder.

In total we had three good sessions and I got to try a GP14 and hanging out over the side as you in when people race.

It was a fun if somewhat wet day and I would recommend it to anyone.

Cafe

Coffee Meeting

This is an old shot from back in February.  I am currently going through my back catalogue and making sure the keywords and metadata is correct before getting finally filed away.

I recently changed my filing system so its a good excuse to check my older photographs.

I try and go for a walk round Lincoln at least once or twice a week and a trip up to the cathedral and Bailgate region at least once every couple of months.

Whitby Goth WeekendIf any of you were up there this August bank holiday you would have had quite a treat as it was the annual steam punk festival.

We decided to take it easy this bank holiday and just potter around the village making chutney and jam from the glut of marrows we currently have in the garden and frequent long walks with Timmy together with the odd trip to the village pub to check out this weeks guest beer.

1940’s Weekend

Lincoln 1940's Weekend-2Once we hit August it seems almost every weekend there is something going on here in Lincoln.  This weekend just gone was a 1940’s weekend, so lots of people dressed up, vintage vehicles and vintage stalls selling anything from 1940 – 1970.

I am sure that at some point someone is even going to start selling stuff from the 1980’s as ‘vintage’.

We parked up on the outskirts of the city and then had a very enjoyable walk with Timmy the Greyhound along the tow path of the canal.

Lincoln 1940's Weekend

Once in the city we had a look round the stalls before finally heading to the best coffee shop in Lincoln, Coffee Aroma.

Working from Home

Austin7 in Large FormatWell the date on this blog post is Thursday but actually I am typing this up on the Sunday night as I have had a Tummy bug for the last few days.

I came down with it and a terrible headache on Tuesday, about 15:00, so I finished up work and did not do much else that day.  Then on Wednesday I attended a meeting with a client in the morning and headed off home.

Since then I have been working from home not wanting to give anyone else this bug.

Actually I find I often get a lot more done at home as there is less distractions but having internet based telephone it still means that project managers can get hold of you to discuss things.

So its going to be a quite few days until next week.  Hopefully I am up to visiting Lincoln on Saturday or Sunday as its the 1940’s themed weekend.

North Yorkshire Moors Railway

This weekend we had a big family day out, three generations including Alan the oldest and Sofia the youngest. In total ten adults and children together with Tilly the dog and Timmy the Greyhound.

The excuse was Alan’s 80th birthday, actually it was his 80th last year but will all thats being going on we did not have the time for the big day out last year.

So this Sunday we headed out to Pickering in North Yorkshire to catch the Moors Railway.

Pickering and Whitby

With having Timmy in Tow (#TimmyOnTour) I was travelling light with just a Leica M8 and Summicron 35m.

We enjoyed the ride as far as Whitby then had a few hours there before catching the last train back.

Pickering and Whitby-4

I took a selection of photographs from quick snaps to a few more arty shots. The weather was great but it was a long day and it was not just Timmy who was very tired by the end, but still very worthwhile. If you get the chance to have a ride on the North Yorkshire Moors Railway then do, its a very enjoyable day out.

Home Harvest

Timmy-2

We are doing quite well in the veg plot this year.  This is our third year of growing our own vegetables and each year we learn more.

Last year the big successes were the late potatoes, onions and butternut squash.

This year the main crop potatoes have proven to be a great success (last year we failed to water them enough).  Again we have onions and we also grew garlic for the first time.  The big success was the marrows.  Sunday tea was stuffed marrows and we now have lots coming through so are looking for more recipes.

Wales Holiday

Timmy in Wales-2

We have just our summer holiday. We had a few single days away plus a longer stop in Wales with Timmy the Greyhound. We found a nice Inn which would except dogs and hounds for just a £10 supplement and we could take breakfast and evening meals in the bar so Timmy the Greyhound could sit with us.

Timmy in Wales-3Wales being Wales meant we did have rain but luckily for only one day, unlike back at home where it rained everyday. Timmy in Wales

Photography wise I took an M4 and a M8 but only shot a few digital photographs with the M8.

Holiday Time

Orkney Sea Scape

Last year our main holiday of the year was to Orkney.  Our honeymoon was to Orkney and last year was our ten year anniversary so we went back.

This year with the holidays approaching we are now planning are next trip.  This time its likely to be Wales and not Scotland as its been a while since we visited the land of the red dragon.

Cakes

Lincoln Streets-4

Up hill Lincoln has some fantastic shops and is quite a tourist area with the castle and cathedral being there.  This means lots of cake and teashops.

If your shy at street photography, then this is an easy start, just snap pictures of people looking in shop windows.

Holiday Bookings

Timmy on the Beach

We have some time off coming up so this past weekend we have been searching for places to stay that take dogs.  The place we really wanted to go was fully booked but we still managed to find somewhere and only a £10 surcharge to cover room cleaning to take Timmy the Greyhound.

I now need to decide what camera equipment to take.  Like are last trip out to Southwold, I would like to shoot some film, so its just a matter of choosing the format, small (35mm), medium or large 5 x 4 inches.
